History of Salvation, Story of our Salvation: Signs and Realities

Sr. Miriam Alejandrino, OSB
An Abstract
Our study of this topic is divided into three parts: the first part analyzes God’s action in the life of the Israelites as narrated in the Hebrew Bible, particularly in the second creation account which belongs to the Yahwist tradition (Gen 2:4b-3:24) and the journey of the Israelites through the desert (Exodus 16-18), and His revelation in the New Testament through Jesus Christ, specifically in the gospel of John and the first letter of John; the second part brings out the signs from the above texts and examines their relevance and manifestations in our daily life; the third part presents some implications and challenges posed by these signs and realities for our spirituality and missiological/pastoral activities.
The study starts with a narrative analysis of the selected texts and concludes with a theological synthesis and pastoral/missiological challenges for us. The presentation aims to lead the readers/audience to see for themselves that the history of salvation as narrated in the Bible is also our story of salvation. History of salvation continues to unfold in our life and history today. The Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation no. 3 says, “God, who creates and conserves all things by his Word (Jn 1:3), provides men with constant evidence of himself in created realities (Rom 1:19-20). Saint Paul instructs the Romans, “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope” (15:4).
